Juliet Kepes, nee Appleby, was born June 29, 1919, in London, England. She came to the United States in 1937. She studied art in England, and later at the Chicago School of Design. She began illustrating and writing children's books in the 1950s, and received a Caldecott Honor citation for Five Little Monkeys in 1952.
